  1. I have searched the forum and did not find a solution - some of the post seemed to be from last year so hopefully one has been found now.

If you have an MKV file with subs in it (hardcoded not external) - how can you play this on the PS3.
I converted the file to M2TS using TSMuxer - which was great - but the subs do not appear and no option to select them on the PS3.

I tried using TSMuxer to create AVCHD Disk and I do not have a bluray burner so I copied the BDMV and CERTIFICATE folders onto the PS3 - but it would only let me browse the folders and play the .m2ts file in the stream folder.

I also have a 16GB memory stick that I use with the PS3 - would this work better? It is formatted as FAT32 so cannot take the 4.7GB file - should I format the USB stick to NTFS?

Thanks for any help on this.

If the files created by tsmuxer will fit on a DVD blank, use Imgburn to create an AVHD disc. This will play on the PS3. Or use PS3 Media Streamer to stream the original file to your PS3 form your PC.

If the files wont fit on a blank, use MultiAVCHD to re-encode them and author them to something that will fit. It can output a format for burning, or for putting on memory cards.

  3. Thanks - will an AVCHD 'Disc' play via usb memory stick on the PS3? The file is too big at nearly 5GB - will the ps3 play the AVCHD if the folders are put on a usb memory stick?

edit: Just tried via PS3 Media Server using the original MKV - jerky!

You can use MultiAVCHD to author a structure that will fit on a USB drive. It will split the files to make sure they fit under the FAT32 format. Just choose one of the PS3 output options.

  5. Thanks you again - my USB drive is 16gb so could hold the file ok. Should I reformat the usb drive as NTFS?

PS3 won't read NTFS, so it is FAT32 or nothing. MultiAVCHD will create a playable structure where all the files will fit under the FTA32 4GB filesize limit.

  7. I really thought I was on to a winner here - I used MKV2VOB and selected usb as the file output. It created the AVCHD files and folders and even split the resulting mts files into 2 so it would fit on a fat32 memory stick.

Put it in the PS3 and it played great - but no subtitles again! And no option to select subtitles!

Might try MultiAVCHD but dont want to reencode for hours

If the files are already compliant, no re-encoding will be done.

  9. Thanks - before I tried multiavchd - I tried MKV2VOB again, this time in the configurationt tab I choose "Always encode subtitles" - and created the AVCHD for USB.

It works great now in the PS3 - subtitles appear.

    Thanks for the help guns1inger

Your subs are soft subs, i.e. not hardcoded. They're just muxed into the MKV. If they were hardcoded, they would be part of the video picture itself, with no way to turn them off.
