I just purchase a Canon Vixia HF M31. I am having difficulty transferring the video from the camcorder to the PC and i'm sure it's user error. I am new to video, but have a lot of experience with digital photography. With digital photography I simply insert the media card and transfer to a folder of my choice on the PC. What is the easiest way to transfer to the PC from the camcorder? When you transfer it to the PC is there a way you can have it automatically delete from the camcorder or do you have to go back in to the camcorder and manually delete all files after you transfer.

Is it possible to transfer to a folder i designate on my pc, files get deleted from camcorder as it transfers, and then i can view or edit the video using image mixer (or any other editing softwar for that matter) directly from the folder i am transferring to.

I am using an older pc and planning on getting a new one in the next few weeks (either Mac or PC-will do my research). For now my main concern is to accurately and safely transfer the date to a folder on to my external hard drive and then later access it for editing down the road on my new computer when I get it.

    Greatly appreciate all feedback.

    Thanks.

On one of the supplied discs is a operators manual ... page 72 I think is what you should be looking at.

Basically connect the camera to its own power source, turn on, enter main menu displaying all video clips ... in this view there should be two options below, use the toggle to highlight the choice on the right.

Connect to pc via usb, then and only, turn pc on.

Once pc system is up and running return to camera and hit the center toggle to enable "pc transfer mode" ... system should recognize the device as mass storage type ... from here you can use cut and paste from the camera's onboard storage to a system folder you choose ... this action will copy to a folder you have chosen and delete the files from the camera ... I didn't check to see if the software had this option ... was helping a new owner become acquainted with her new camera.

To disconnect camera, shut pc down then disconnect camera.

You can't transfer Vixia video to a PC using the USB port. That connection is used for transferring still images only. Rather, the IEEE 1394 port with a Firewire cable is required for video transfer. However, there is considerably more to this story than using the correct cable. I suggest you carefully read my post at Canon HV20/30/40 IEEE 1394 connectivity issues with Windows XP

This provides a comprehensive treatment of transferring video from recent Canon camcorders. In addition, the easiest software is free: MS Windows Movie Maker. Once your Camcorder is connected it will be recognized by MSWMMM as a video capture device in the "Capture from Video Device" window. Click on the icon and follow the instructions; you'll be able to save your raw footage as a .wmv file which can then be edited with your favourite post-production suite of tools.

Post back if you're still having difficulty, and I'll take you through it step-by-step.

The Canon Vixia HF M31 is an AVCHD model. It doesn't use Firewire. The user should use the supplied Canon software to transfer over USB or get a flash adapter to copy from the flash media.
