To work with the 5990/92, the drive needs to be formatted FAT32.

I recently purchased a Hitachi 2TB external drive. This shipped with the entire drive formatted FAT32 so that it would work immediately with Windows, MacOSX or Linux. It came with software links and instructions to convert to NTFS, Mac or Linux formats. I was very impressed with the ease of setup and the speed of this drive. The drive inside is 7200 RPM. For my needs I changed FAT32 partition size to 80GB, then created a second partition which I formatted to NTFS. I did all this with PartdMagic, a live Linux CD.

Check to see how the WD drives are formatted. Also keep in mind that FAT32 limits file size to 4GB and the 5990 menu structure supports a limited number of files. The rest go unseen.

    I have done my homework,

Just need to know wich one is better. I will be dividing it (partition) in half, and formating it to fat32. Half will be for movies and tv shows, and the other half for anime and cartoons. Don't care about the 4gb size limit. All of my movies are around 700mb, single episode for tv shows are about 350mb, and anime and cartoons are about 175-250mb for single episode.

just wanting to know what the difference is between the 2 because they are both 2TB, if anyone can help.

    Thanks,

Depending on the application, seek time can be critical for drive performance. You may need to dig find the specs for the drive inside the case. I do notice better general performance for that 7200 RPM Hitachi drive vs. several WD and Seagate external USB2 drives.

eSATA always gives better performance vs. USB2.

Thanks, don't know why I didn't think of going on amazon and checking the reviews, guess just slipped my mind lol. The reason I posted the links from walmart was because I have a $120 gift card for walmart lol. And guess I will be going with the one that is $119 (elements) as it has better reviews then the other one.

With the lack of e-SATA on new external drives, I'd go with an external enclosure and a good 7200rpm SATA drive.

I have an external enclosure already and my computer case has an e-SATA hot plug on top so I rarely even use the external enclosure for transferring files.

You might want to just buy a 2TB HDD and put in the MY Book enclosure that you already have. It should be pretty easy to open up since you've dropped it a few times.

I have no idea why HDD manufacturers stopped making e-SATA external drives unless it was just to make you pay more for USB 3.0 drives but there are only a couple of those so it really makes no sense at all. One reason could be that since the e-SATA combo drives were not that much more than a USB drive that hardly anyone was buying the USB drive and they were losing money with the extra cost of offering e-SATA and firewire.
