jvc didn't make dvds before, they just had their name label put on other brands. now they bought the taiyo yuden company, so the new jvc's will be t.y.'s. and there won't be any t.y. branded discs.

Actually, Taiyo Yuden bought controlling interest in JVC disc manufacturing a year or so ago: https://www.videohelp.com/forum/archive/taiyo-yuden-to-jvc-conversion-chart-t374644.html So JVC is a subsidiary of TY. I'm guessing they wanted some more manufacturing facilities and the use of the JVC name for better recognition. Not that many media buyers have even heard of TY.

Back in mid 2008, Taiyo Yuden acquired a majority stake in JVC's magnetic and optical media business.

TY bought the JVC brand name, as it applies to optical/magnetic media.
TY can't make JVC-branded TV sets, for example, just JVC-branded discs and tapes.
