I just started trying this for the first time and have a couple questions
1 - is there a button I can push that will add the new subtitle at the time stamp for which I push it?
I know insert adds a new one, but it just adds it after the last one. If there is dead air I need to edit both the start and finish of the subtitle
2 - I have one subtitle with a duration of 5 seconds (long little bit) I set the subtitle to duration for 5 seconds.it only shows for about 2 and then disappears. Well before the hide time. I set the maximum duration to 8 seconds and it still disappears.

    1. NO (I'm not 100% sure but..)
    2. Probably your 5sec subtitle line is overlapping with the next one, try Ctrl+I , or "tools/information and errors/information and errors" and then select "check, than fix errors".

No, its not overlapping at all.
it just disappears and there is nothing but blank screen until the next subtitle shows up when its supposed to. I found out with alt-c and alt-v I can set the start and stop times of subs on the fly. Not perfect, but pretty close
So after I put all the subs in I can watch it again and just alt-v my way through to set the end times. it auto jumps to the next subtitle.
