I'm a newbie, so I don't know all the correct technical terms, but see how the video is washed out looking and slightly out of focus and blurry? Also I see pix-elation. Source video obviously is not that great, so I am wondering can anything be done with a freeware program that would clean the video up a little bit and make it easier to watch?

Any chance of improving the quality by 30% without buying expensive restoration equipment?

If so, can you please point out some products that could improve the video quality?

    thanks

  2. Do you have the original video?

It looks like you uploaded an interlaced video (you didn't deinterlace before uploading).

Also, youtube will re-encode at a low bitrate and you will incur generational losses

What is your target goal? is it youtube, DVD, PC, or something else

Are asking whether the source camcorder video can be improved? Answer is yes.

If you asking if the Youtube stream can be improved, that video has been overcompressed to the point little is left.

If you have it in a proper format, you can try VirtualDub. I doubt there is much that can be done to improve it, though. It looks like the whites are blown out and I suspect there isn't much detail there or in the darker portions of the video.

Lots of video filters for VD here: http://www.thedeemon.com/VirtualDubFilters/

Gradation curves and Color Mill II filters may help. Or at least try 'levels', which is included with VD.

  5. my target is YouTube, I don't have the original video, or raw video, its just a video I downloaded as .vob files. I converted it to mp4 using Avidemux, which I notice has a good amount of filters...Is there anything that I could do with Avidemux that would make this video look better on Youtube? Colors not as washed out, maybe a little sharper and less dull looking. Anything at all really that would improve the video for Youtube.

    thanks

I am dealing mainly with .vob files and mpeg files so Virtual Dub is not an option. I found VD works best with AVI files only. I kinda use Avidemux as the MPEG version of VD.

You can't work on MPeg2 VOBs directly. These must be decompressed for image processing. Also interlace source should be deinterlaced before MPeg4 encoding.

VirtualDub Mod is the 'Mpeg' version of VD. It can open VOBs and Mpegs. But With AVIDemux, try a few of the filters there. Just don't overwrite the original.

is decompressed same as converted to .avi file?

I found that it can open them, but have all kinds of problems trying to output them after editing. maybe its just me, but very frustrated when trying to edit vob or mpg in VD. It works great for avi files.

  10. also, what filters in avidemux can I try that may help? Can someone explain what deinterlace means and how you use it?

also, it appears that a compressed file, such as an mpeg or vob cannot be changed much, while an uncompressed avi can possibly be made changes too as far a quality of video. Is this correct? mixed signals on this one.

In Windows, uncompressed would have an avi extension. You have a choice or YUV formats or RGB.

A VOB must be demuxed, and decompressed before you can "correct" the video. Then it needs to be re-encoded.
