Comments on my new build would be great. I'm open to other suggestions such as a different mobo, ram, ect..

I'm a fan of Gigabyte MBs, especially for AMD CPUs. Not familiar with any of those MBs, so no comment there. I haven't used a Asus for a while, so somewhat biased.
I would guess you may be using more than one hard drive. If so, I would probably use a smaller one for boot. In my setups the boot is just used to run the OS and programs. I'm using a 150GB WD 10K RPM Raptor and it seems to perform fairly well for a boot drive, and is plenty big enough, and it's quiet. I usually install at least three HDDs. The other two larger drives are for editing and archiving.
I didn't see a power supply listed. Gaming may require a bit extra power if you use SLI video cards. I would suggest a modular PS to help with cable management and airflow. -
I already have the PS, GPU, CPU. I'm putting some older hardware back into the mobo I'm using now for a backup pc.
I do like the Raptor. I'll probably use one of those to run my OS and games. I may start myself a video library so thats why I asked about the 1TB. Heck, I may even get two of them based on all the movies I have.
Asus was a good choice a little while back but all the good talk about Gigabyte is making me want to try one. Any suggestions for a Gigabyte mobo? just looking for one that would work great with games and videos, doesn't have to be too fancy. -
Maybe: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128416 Otherwise I would probably recommend one that has the heat pipe setup for the North Bridge chip. They tend to run fairly hot and I don't much like the stock NB cooler with the Gigabyte heat shield on top.
It's hard to get airflow down in there with a big CPU cooler and a hot running video card. The heat pipe setup helps a lot.
On my HTPC, I stuffed a 80mm fan between the CPU cooler and the video card to help cool the NB.

Greetings ...
MoBo's - that's one I never thought of. Learn something new on the web every day!
Thanx-A-Lot and Good Luck with your new PC

Thanks for the suggestion, I've added it to my list
. I didn't like the heat shield much either on any of the boards I looked at, would be great if they were detachable
(wouldn't want to void my warranty to "have it my way")
I probably should be looking a little more towards the USB 3.0 since I do a lot of transfers and I'm not too worried about having on-board video anymore since I finally got a spare card. -
I have the same cpu cooler that you posted but I haven't used it yet. I'm ordering my hardware next week for the AMD Quad system since my new CM Elite 310 case isn't arriving until early April. The CM Hyper 212 Plus has had good reviews especially when using it with a quad cpu. Make sure to order good thermal paste like MX-2 or MX-3. I have had good cpu temps using thodr two types of thermal paste. It's used on my overclocked Wolfdale E6300 & Yorkfield Q9550. I'm using the MX-3 on my stock speed Wolfdale E8400 cpu since I'm using the crappy stock intel cpu cooler in a matx case.
I don't care for Antec cases as there cable management and airflow isn't as good. That's just my opinion. If you're going to spend $100.00 on a Antec 900 case you may as well get the new CM 690 II Advanced case which is the same price. The CM 690 II Advance has a dock for a hard drive on the top of the case.

Cable management and airflow is awesome. Just take a look at the reviews on the internet. There's also the first generation CM 690 case thread at overclock.net and other computer forum sites. I have a first generation CM 690 case.

The first generation CM 690 is also a case for you to consider since it's only $79.99 and there's free shipping.

CM Store also has refurbished CM cases at cheaper prices. Many folks over at overclock.net have purchased cases from them with no problems.

I'm ordering the same ram as you posted but getting a Gigabyte UD2H matx mobo. I don't game so a micro atx mobo is fine for me. I also got that Sony Optiarc drive that was purchased for me by a relative in CA that hasn't been sent to me yet. I'm excited to get that dvd burner into one of my pc's. I also have that same Samsung hard drive in my cart too. Although now it's out of stock.
Just my 2 cents! -
I really can't wait to try the cooler and the new paste. As for the case, I think saving some money and getting the first generation CM 690 is the way to go.
I'm going to be buying everything very slowly so I hope the HDD is in stock when I get the money for it, or maybe even cheaperbut it is a good price.
Thanks for the suggestions, from the both of you.
I'm still open to some other suggestions on the motherboard. I do like the one suggested above but that is probably the only thing that is bringing out my picky side -
The mobo redwudz posted looks good if you're into gaming. If you wanna save even more money you could look into the CM 590 case too which is the little brother of the CM 690. Or even the CM Gladiator 600 case which is similar to the CM 590 case. If I still had the original CM 690 case I'd sell it to you but the shipping cost from Honolulu to the mainland would be so expensive. You'd be better off buying it from newegg with a cheaper shipping cost. I'm tired of my CM 690 so I may just sell it on craigslist.

Yuh, I'll prolly hold off on the Samsung 1Tb hard drive for now too since I wanna buy another Panasonic blu-ray standalone player. I just checked Amazon.com and they're shipping out my case on 3/22/10 so it's perfect timing for me to order next week the Gigabyte AMD AM3 mobo, AMD 630 Propus cpu and GSkill ddr3-1600 ram next week.
I've read at some forums on how some peeps had problems with ddr3-ram with AMD mobos especially with GSkill. I checked with the GSKill forum to make sure the ram i was choosing would be compatible with the Gigabyte mobo. GSkill rep said it is so hopefully I won't have any problems. -
Just a side comment, those blue logo shields on the Gigabyte NBs are glued on to the heat sink, but don't come off easily. When I did, I damaged the thermal paste and had to apply a new coat.
I suspect those are put there because the PR boys wanted a central logo location. They surely don't help cooling in any way I can figure. The NB chip under there is less than 1/4" square and the HS balances on it, so be very careful not to ever bump the heat sink or it will run even hotter if it messes up the heatsink contact with the chip. I learned that the hard way.
I agree with your method of PC parts acquisition. Spend a long time in selection and information gathering before you buy. You can also download the motherboard manuals and familiarize yourself with them before ordering or before delivery. -
I really like those cases budz. I'm just going to have trouble picking which way I want my hard dives to face.. My Graphics card is about 10 inches long so I'm not sure if it will need to go into the hard drive bays or not.
Thanks for the comment redwudz. I was really thinking of taking the shields off myself but would hate to damage anything. I'm sure they won't bother me too much though.
I'll take your advice and go download a few of the mobo manuals to get a better idea of what I'll actually be getting out of the board. -
^^^Hey! start your own thread instead of hijacking this one.

sad part he is not a new member
anyways go with WD hard drives (black edition) better support longer warranty -

Thanks for moving the post
I'm a huge fan of WD. I'm going to be getting the Raptor along with a 1-2TB drive.
I have a Samsung 200GB that has lasted me a veeeerrry long timeI also have a couple of relatives who have been using a few for about 3 years now and no problems so they don't make me hesitate on a good price for one.
But my searching hasn't come to an end yet, I'm sure I'll side with either WD or Samsung depending on the rpm, space, and cache for the right price. -
I think I'm going to go with the mobo suggested, I like it very much (especially since it's up to date).
I like the Cooler Master cases suggested also so I browsed through some more cases they have to offer before I make a final decision, which would possibly be one that is already suggested. So here are a couple of cases that I would appreciate a comment on, especially if you have experience with the case.

I appreciate all the help and if there is anything that sticks out about these then please let me know. I would rather go with one that budz has had experience with than buy one that may run a little warm or something. -
The CM Storm Scout and HAF 922 are also excellent gaming cases. They both have their own clubs at overclock.net in the computer case section. Both cases have excellent cable management and airflow. Take a look at the links below. You could get ideas too on how to do your cable management/mods.

Perfect links! Seems like I would have plenty of room for my GTX 260 and can add plenty of fans if needed.
I appreciate all the help from you two, Budz and Redwudz
