im looking at the prospect of buying a hd camcorder with a view to producing a quality HD file for editing
is there any particular type of file that i should be looking for?
ive heard of avchd but from what ive gleamed from this web site its quite a lossy file type.
some camcorder specs talk of outputing 'live hd' but oive no idea what that means..

"a quality HD file" ?? what's the budget? what is the camera going to be used to shoot? set shots off of a tripod? fast action handheld? home movies in low light? the next avatar?

point taken
the budget is around 1500 us dollars so not much really
its just for home movies off tripod -
HDV cams are a good all round consumer choice. canon hv40 or 30 might fit. with the extra money buy an add-on mic, extra batteries, and the best tripod you can afford/carry.
HDV is easy enough for most editors to handle.--
