Microsoft has been running these '7 was my idea' ads, one in particular claims startup times have been dramatically improved...
Well, I'm not seeing anything to brag about, out here in the real world with Symantec and apparently everything else on the new machine involved someway in startup.
I thought it might be good to have a thread where people could post their startup times- just giving the machine, the OS version and which AV security suite.
Eventually we can mebbe see some realistic times, eh?

depends on yours and every1 else's real world startup capabilities...i have many services turned off and in startup i just have catalyst control center and Eset AV running...my average startup is 39 to 40 seconds...Symantec tends to be a bit a a resource hog and i would stay away from it...its starts up faster compared to Vista...Vista imo was atrocious to get going

it really depends on which version of vista you're talking about. i have a copy of vista basic which i got dirt cheap and before installing it i decided to try out all versions of vista for 30 days (since you can install the OS with no serial number and no need to activate for 30 days) and all installs were clean installs.
i found ultimate to be a complete pile of garbage, no matter what i did it would hammer my hdd's, it was slow, it would lock up completely to the point i would have to hit the reset button, applications would crash, just garbage. i found business to be somewhat better, a bit peppier, a bit more stable and less likely to lock up and fewer applications would refuse to run, i found premium to be better still but i did not test it as thoroughly and finally i find vista basic to be a decent OS, "feels" much lighter, less compatibility problems, no lockups (so far), one or two applications that refuse to run for any great length of time, but once i disabled a crap load of services, not bad.
it boots up in about 30 seconds, the one thing you can do is msconfig-->boot-->advanced options and set the number of processors (to use during bootup) to the number of processors you have (i.e. in a dual core you choose 2, in a quad core you choose 4), that should speed up the boot times somewhat.
