Can you differentiate between a 3D Cinema and a 2D Cinema? How can a 3D movie be shown on a 2D Cinema?

What makes it to be 3D? I mean, there are movies that are 3D especially animation like Shrek, but they say it can only be available in 3D at selected theaters...but hello, the movie is already 3D itself no matter where you view it...

Pls help me. I'm really confused.

There are several digital cinema 3D technologies. All transmit separate pictures to the left and right eye by using special polarizing glasses. A 3D projector can be switched to 2D, or non-3D media or film can be used in 2D theaters.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_cinema see section 5.3

The old 3D film used red and blue filtered glasses to separate eye viewpoints. It didn't work very well.

Yes, the picture appears to have depth as well as width and height. This is achieved by showing different views to each eye (typically using LCD shutter glasses these days). Just like in the real world where each of your eyes sees a slightly different view because they are in different places. Your brain takes these two different images and "calculates" how far away each object in the field of view is.

You show only one view to both eyes.

No, a single camera shoots a flat 2D image. You need two cameras for your brain to fully create the perception of depth.

    Try this:

Look at your computer screen with one eye. Hold two pens up in front of you, one at arms length, the other an inch closer. Hold your head and the pens very still. Notice how it's hard to say exactly which pen is closer? Now open your other eye. Suddenly you can tell exactly which pen is closer.

In the theater the background will appear to be way off in the distance behind the screen. Objects in the foreground can appear to jump out of the screen and nearly into your face.

Most movies haven't needed (and will not need) that feature.

i hope they dont tbh. wearing the glasses can be annoying and a 3 hours movie would get you a major headache lol.
i've only ever seen two 3d "movies". first was captain e-o or something with michael jackson at epcot center in the late
80s and the 2nd was an imax one 10 years ago in LA.
both were short, i couldn't imagine watching a 90 minute movie in 3d.

If you get to Cape kennedy, be sure to watch the NASA 3D IMAX features. It works great for spacecraft.

Loved UP in 3D. The glasses nowadays are more comfortable, and the polarised 3D effect doesn't seem to strain the eyes the way standard red/blue anaglyph does. Haven't yet seen Avatar though.
