    Hi Everyone

    www.mediafire.com/?5ungjtnzjdd

I've uploaded a very simple File Size & Video Bitrate Calculator - the rar is only 5kb, the exe is 24kb

    1. Calculate FileSize
    enter Duration in minutes
enter desired Video Bitrate in KB
enter desired Audio Bitrate in KB
    Click GetFileSize

    returns:
    Total Bitrate In KB
    File Size in MB
Also includes a DVD Overhead of 7.03%
i.e. converting from m2v/ac3 or mpg to DVD structure
The 7.03% is based on the size difference between a m2v file and the VOB file size
This % will vary - better to be safe than sorry

    2. Calculate Bitrate
enter desired File Size in MB
    enter Audio bitrate
    enter Duration in Minutes
    Click get VideoBitrate

    returns:
    Video Bitrate in KB
    Total Bitrate in KB

all entries are Single Precision - i.e. with decimals

Please let me know if you find any bugs

    Thanks,
    wiseant

Not the finest interface I have seen. .

But it seems to work fine.

    A couple of things:

If you are talking about filesize, the most likely nomenclature would be MB, not KB. You got that most of the time...
If you are talking about bitrate, the most likely nomenclature would be kb per second, not kb, not KB, etc.

Where are you getting this "7.03%" overhead business? For one thing, an M2V is an elementary Video stream. It doesn't make sense to compare it alone with a completed VOB. It would make a LOT more sense if you were to compare:

[ elementary V size + elementary A size] vs. MPG2 Program Stream vs. DVD VOB (assuming only 1 track of each kind)

Then, you would find out something meaningful.

I say this because I have successfully made a whole lot (100s) of SL DVDs using somewhere hovering around 5%.
Why don't you just give the user the choice in the matter?

Why do you also assume you would only have 1 audio track? And what about counting up subtitle tracks?

Are you calculating using KB = 1000B (etc) or KB = 1024B (etc) more clearly known as KiB?
These kind of things ought to be made clear to the user.

    But it's a start...

    Hi Scott

    Thanks for the constructive criticism

Yes- I will change to kb per second -> kb/s

I suspected that someone would note the "one audio file"

I presumed that if a user had more than one - then they would simply add the bitrates together - but I can add additional audio bitrate info - is two enough?

Re subtitles - I suppose certain subtitles can take up some space - I looked at 24 different subtitle packages I have - they range in size from 745 KB to 24 MB - so, yes, I should incorporate this . . .

    I use 1Megabyte = 1024Kilobytes

Re the DVD "overhead" this is maximum based on an I-frame only m2v to a no audio vob (space for the navpak info, etc) - I can't see where the audio portion adds any real overhead . .

as I mentioned - better to be safe than sorry - but typically I have found this to be approx 5% - but this depends on a few factors

You should have asked about menu space - I may incorporate this calculator into my upcoming DVDMotionMenuMagic application where motion menus could take up some extra space . . .

    Thanks again, wiseant
