Ok I've had this glitch on my screen for awhile now. I've had it on other occasions too.

I've gotten it from right clicking and then it just sticks there. I have done several full shutdowns since this has happened. I have also just now played a dvd movie in full screen thinking that might jar the display driver loose and get rid of it. No luck. I even installed an old video game (disc based full direct x support - though directx 5- it was Ncaa 99 that I still have on hand for some unknown reason.... ). Even playing a full screen (not windowed) video game has not gotten rid of it.

It's not really a problem just an annoyance.

    Solutions are welcomed.

FYI I am running service pack 3 on XP (home version 32bit)

  3. What happens when you right-click on it?
Have you tried hiding inactive items?
Last resort is use CCleaner->Tools->Startup to disable.

@moviegeek - nothing happens when i click on it. Its the imprint after a prior right click (when it had an option to click DESKTOP - that is what is left).

I tried the inactive option and it is still there.

What is ccleaner? Never heard of it?

@xylob - what feature in msconfig did you mean to try?

@noahtuck - its the DESKTOP that is what I am talking about (its what shouldn't be there )

    Ahhh the word itself.

Yeah i've had weird stuff like that happen before on XP & Vista.

It either went away after awhile or after a reboot.

No clue's why, prob. just something in windows messing up, nothing new

    EDIT:
I'd have to fire up one of my XP machines but could it be when you have other screens up, like a browser, if you click on it it minimizes everything and shows your desktop ?

That never even crossed my mind because i just assumed most people knew about that ?

Man, i have been autohiding mine for years, as long as you could :P

It's not Windows 'messing up' - that's just how the extra toolbars are usually handled on the Taskbar. For example, the Desktop toolbar is like the Quick Launch toolbar, but it's supposed to give you quick access to the icons on your desktop (without having to minimize everything).
It does default to displaying the toolbar title and icon text, however, so if you do want to keep the toolbar around, you can right-click on the title ("Desktop", for example) and uncheck "Show Title". ("Show Text" is for the icon text.)
