Thanks for the link, it was really helpful. But I'm still unclear about the DirectX 9 graphic device requirement. That website doesn't list my current graphic device which is Intel Extreme Graphics 2 integrated in Intel 865G chipset. Does anyone know if that's compatible too?

Use the Windows 7 upgrade advisor to see if your hardware is compatible. That's the only way you'll find out.

Unfortunately, my PC is already dead which is why I'm thinking might as well get Windows 7. I'm only able to boot into Safe Mode fine but the advisor cannot run in Safe Mode. This sucks.

Dead in what way?? Is Windows 2000 so corrupted that you can't boot into it?? I doubt your built in video will be able to run W7. You'll probably have to get a new video card that supports it. I had a old AGP 8X ATI 9200 video card that didn't support W7. I sold it along with a Intel P4 3.00 cpu, Biostar P4 mobo and 1gb ddr400 ram. Instead of getting W7 just buy XP home version OEM from Newegg. Or upgrade your video card.

They are about as low as you can go without resorting to having someone sketch the image for you. I know - I have a laptop with a newer Intel chipset, which is marginal (it runs Windows 7 fine, including Aero, but you wouldn't play games on it), and a three year old desktop for the kids which does not support DirectX fully enough for simple games.

That's good, I don't play any games. The most intensive thing I'll be doing is video encoding. As for my PC, I'm not sure what the problem is yet. So far, it just freezes at the Windows loading screen. I can only use Safe Mode to successfully boot into Windows. Even Last Known Configuration freezes. I might try removing the optional hardware to see what's the problem.

Try to boot with logging. Windows displays the name of each driver and program as it's loaded. That might show you what is causing the problem. Then you can boot in safe mode and rename or delete the driver that's causing the problem.

Yutk, Roxio and Arcsoft: the two worst bloatware (can't really called them software, because people know enoiugh to ignore them as legit ) are on windows 7 compatible list.

It would be nice, if those who are running Win 7, could generate to a list of programs of interest to this forum, that are Win 7 compatible, i.e., DVD Shrink, Xmedia recode, etc, etc. The things that are not given by the above MS compatibility site. I would hate to update, only to find my favorite Win XP programs do not run properly in the new OS.

Run the compatility checker. I certainly was accurate with my hardware. And Windows 7 does a good job of either locating and downloading drivers (such as current Nvidia drivers) or pointing you in the right direction (my Winfast TV card)
