I have some DVDs that I have tried backing up recently. I have a Mac and purchased Aimersoft DVD Copy. It will read through the CSS protection and create a copied disc that is readable by my MacBook. However, when I put the discs in my standalone DVD player, they do not work. ... Well, most of them do not work. Let me specify. I bought two boxes of DVD+R DL discs from a local store. They are both Memorex DVD+R DL 8x 8.5GB 240 minute discs. It appears as though the two boxes have different disc prints, meaning maybe they came from different factories or production runs, but they are supposed to be the same disc. Anyway, I have one disc burnt from one of the boxes and several from the other. The one disc that I burned alone from one of the boxes will work in my standalone DVD player. It is book typed as a DVD+R DL and all of the stats are exactly the same of the discs I burned from the other box. However, all of the discs burned from the other box are unreadable by my standalone DVD player. Yet, the weird thing is that they are readable in my MacBook. I thought maybe it was a book typing problem, but like I said above, the one that works in my standalone is also book typed as a DVD+R DL. Is the problem here the media? And if it is the media, how can I reliably burn the DL discs in the future without ending up with a bunch of coasters? Please advise. Thanks in advance!

sounds like a media problem. Memorex has a long and sordid history with their DL media. Should ahve checked this site for recommendations or just read some of the previous discussion threads. Memorex has been hit and miss based on past discussions. You never know what you are going to get. Try Verbatim instead.

Memorex discs are terrible quality. There are worse discs out there, but Memorex discs are pretty bad. I speak from experience.
The ONLY reliable DL media is Verbatim DVD+R DL discs. That's it. I can't make any guarantees for burning on Macs though. Most of us only trust a program called ImgBurn for burning DL media and it only runs on Windows.
Note that some older DVD players may not play DL discs at all or may only play the first layer. However, your problem is most likely that the discs are Memorex. -
By the way, welcome to the forums, but you did a no-no around here. We don't like cross posting, which is where you post the same message to multiple forums. I have notified the moderators and they should be locking your other post and telling you not to do that again in the future.

Sorry, only posted it a second time because I thought I posted it in the wrong place the first time. Definitely will not do that again.
Anyway, regarding Verbatim DL media, are there different types or are they all the same? Thanks in advance! -

They make Lightscribe label discs (used by people who want to burn labels via the Lightscribe labeling system), various silver discs you can write on with Sharpies and DataLifePlus inkjet printable discs. Here's what I know.
1) The DataLifePlus inkjet printable discs are ONLY at 2.4x speed. They are made in Singapore and are top notch media. They are expensive and must be ordered online.
2) I know nothing about the Lightscribe discs other than that they make them. I abandoned Lightscribe quite a while ago. It's very inferior to inkjet label printing in my opinion.
3) Among the normal silver labeled discs you can write on with Sharpies, some are made in India and some are made in Singapore. The 2.4x-6x discs are usually made in India. The 2.4x discs are usually made in India. The 8x-10x discs seem to only be made in Singapore. Singapore made discs may be of higher quality than made in India discs, but they cost more because they are rated at higher speeds. So if you want to be sure to get Singapore made discs you will need to seek out the 8x-10x discs or else check in a store to see where they were made on the cake box label.
I don't personally recommend burning DL discs at speeds faster than 4x for best results. Others may argue, but that's my personal recommendation. -
Thanks so much for all the information, very helpful! I went and purchased some Verbatim DVD+R DL discs tonight and will give it a whirl at a max 4x burn. I bought the 8x variety in the 5-pack, manufactured in Singapore, the regular kind that you can write on with a marker. I think you called these the silver-labeled discs. Yes, they were quite a bit more than the other options in the store, so let's hope this works. Fingers crossed, and I will report back. Again, thank you for all the help, and my sincerest apology for the double-post. Best regards, Brian.

If you do post and then decide it might be better in a different forum, you can click on the link in the bottom right corner of the post that says [b]Report this Post[/i]. It will ask for a reason, and you can simple type move to Mac forum, for example. This will go directly to the moderators, and one of them will move it when they get a chance - usually pretty quickly.
Read my blog here.
