Are there machines that can record direct to an external drive??

I was told at an electronics store that DVR machines can only record to the internal drive. Not ideal for me because I have a tonne of tapes, and recording to the internal drive, and then transferring to an external drive when the internal one gets full is just adding to the amount of work.
