  1. I have a DVD in which the volume is too low. I have to literally blast the TV volume up to an abnormally high level just to hear the speech properly. But when I do this, I then hear a hissing noise in the background. This happens with every TV and PC I have tried playing the DVD on.

Is there anyway that I can fix this so that the volume for the DVD audio track is set to a higher level and remove the background noise? If so, how do I go about doing this?

I was thinking of using something like Sound Forge to edit the audio track. But as it is a WAV editor, the audio track from the DVD will need to be in either WAV or MP3 format so that I can do any editing that I want and then convert it and multiplex it back with the video then author it for it to be ready to burn to DVD.

Demultiplex the video and audio from the dvd using pgcdemux.
Convert the ac3 to wav using some tool, like audacity or goldwave.
Edit using soundforge or edit directly in audacity. I would try a normalize filter...removeing background noise is harder.
Convert to new audio to ac3 using aften.
Add back the new ac3 audio with the old video using muxman.
Add back the menu and extras using vobblanker.

See http://www.digital-digest.com/articles/Simplistic_Guide_for_Replacing_DVD_Streams_page1.html for details how to demultiplex and reauthor.

  3. Have noted all of the above. But is there anyway that I can have Stereo (2 channel) sound on the DVD?

I don't want and don't need AC3 Dolby Digital sound as all of my TVs have just the 2 speakers.

I think I read somewhere that DVDs can support MP2 sound? If so then how do I go about muxing a DVD with MP2 sound?

You can make ac3 in stereo also.

But if you want mp2 try toolame...but not all players may support it.

  6. Is there any software that has a GUI, is free and will convert my WAV files to MP2 files?

I don't really want to be using command line based software if I can help it.

I've found Xvid4PSP (free) to be very useful for audio work. It will do what you ask while normalizing the output.

Ac3 can be the same size as mp2 and stereo and accepted by all the dvd players, cant see any reason why you want mp2 which might not work on some dvd players.Use yr_eac3to_more_gui to convert to ac3.
    I think,therefore i am a hamster.

  9. I'm having a problem with muxman. It only seems to multiplex the first VTS_01_1.VOB file with the new normalised ac3/mp2 file. Then it just stops right there.

So that leaves me with more than 3 quarters of the video which has not been processed.

Any ideas as to what the issue is here?

    snip
Get hold of MediaInfo and post the log for the the first VOB file on your DVD so that we know a bit more of the problem.

You can demux each your VOB files with a GUI and free program MPEGStreamclip. Then you can load the resulting audio file/s into Soundforge, normalise the level and save out as wav etc. Then you will need to reauthor your video and new audio after remuxing into a normal MPEG2 file. You can do this in a MPEG editor like Womble or a freebie Cuttermaran https://www.videohelp.com/tools/Cuttermaran
