I have just imported my first VHS tape using iMovie.

I have found the .dv file and just in the process of loading this back into iMovie...

Is this what I should be doing ?

Or is there some process I should follow when converting VHS tapes into iMovie ? If there is could somebody
please point me in the direction of maybe an idiots guide to do doing this ?

Sorry just learning about all this.

Which version of iMovie are you using? iMovieHD (version 6)? Or are you using the version that came with your Mac (probably v8 )?

You are doing things properly. What do you plan to do with the video once it's loaded into iMovie? You might find iMovieHD an easier app to deal with (since your footage is already in DV). PM me if you'd like the link to the app. Apple used to provide the link for iMovie users who hated the new version of the app (I count myself among them) but, although you may continue to use it, Apple doesn't tell you where to get it any more.

How are you creating the DV file from the VHS tape? There are many devices that do this where you can have the video imported directly to iMovie at the same time it is being captured from the tape by your Mac.

I'm pretty sure this works with the ADVC-55. iMovie can see that device and capture directly into iMovie so it is all done in one step. Connect everything before launching iMovie and then choose Import from Camera...

iMovie does recognize it but it did not go straight into iMovie, but that may have been my fault as i had left an old event in there
