Hi,
I was just curious about all those old black and white tv's with those hardwired antennaes (you know the screw ones and not the rf type??). If you had a hdtv converter would you be able to connect them and watch hdtv on the old black and white set???
I know that would be a huge waste of time and money since buying a new tv would be so much more efficient. I was just wondering if it was possible. There shouldn't be any if you can convert the rf to the wire type of hook up (I know there a ton of hookups like that and I've used a few over the years, I was just wondering if they were compatible with the old sets).
So is this possible??????
Kevin
(I'm not looking to do it I was just curious)

Donatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw?

Yes it would work. You just need the adapter. You can connect VCRs and DVD players to them too, same principle. The NTSC signal standard hasn't changed and is backward compatible to B&W.

Hi,
Ok thanks.
I figured it would be just a downconversion to show the picture. Boy it would be funny to have a high def signal to a b&w set but hooked up to a digital surround sound system!

that would be cool to see on one of those huge 25in B/W console set. The ones that looked like wood furniture.

i have an rf wired adapter & I hooked it up to my old B&W TV 1985. connect it to converter box, but did not get any digital channels. wonder what I did wrong? seems like it won't work.
I have color old TV & it works but no sound. that's why I try to use B&W TV to get sound. -
Over here it is perfectly viable to put a HD box on an SD TV over here simply because the HD channels are slowly diverging from the SD channels in content. I have a HD box connected to an SD DVD recorder so I can record programming from both, but I know people who do it because they cannot afford to upgrade their TV (or don't care to) but want to see the full range of programming. (That said, I don't know anyone who still has a working b&w TV in their house)

The answer to the question is here:

I think it can be seen World wide but some BBC content is country protected. Its a 1936 TV showing a digital broadcast.
A converter is obviously being used, not only from digital to analog but also down to the original 405 line TV standard!
