Hey guys, i was searching online and i found these forums, and it looks like there are many knowledgeable people here.

I am a computer technician, but this one has me stumped.

I have a 500BG WD HD (IDE) and it is having issues. I got it from a friend who said 'their computer crashed, so they just went and bought a new one' and they gave this HD to me.

So the first thing i did was pop it in my PC and turn it on to see what happened. It detected the drive no problem, but when i tried to access it it gave me an error saying the partition is not formatted. i formatted it, no problems, then tried to access it again... with the same result.

so i shut down the computer and booted up into my copy of hiren's boot disk and procedded to killdisk it, repartition it via partition magic, and format it to NTFS. no problems so far, then as soon as i booted back into windows....'this partition is not formatted"

so by this point i am kind of flustered. i went back and rechecked all of my connections and jumpers, all set correctly.

i went back into my boot disk and ran the WD diagnostics on it, all pass.
so whats goin on with this thing? im led to believe its a corrupted MFT, but how can that be, and if it IS, is there a way to fix it?

When you are having problems like that with a HD, it's best to scrap it, especially since you haven't used it and don't need to recover data.

    Easy come, easy go.

HD Tune may give you some useful info. It can also check the drives SMART information.

    http://www.hdtune.com/

There is a free version and a pro version (15 day free trial). But, first and foremost as minidv2dvd suggested, run a chkdsk.
