.mp4 to .avi

I've searched and searched and can't seem to find the answer on how to convert .mp4 to .iso or even .avi. The programs that I use are DIKO, DVD SHRINK and DVD DECRYPTER. They all work well with .iso files, but now that I have an .mp4 file I'm not sure what to do with it. PLEASE HELP!

MP4 is AVI already. What do you want to do with the file? If you have the right codecs installed you should be able to convert it to other formats.

Check it with AVIcodec or Gspot and see which codecs are required then install them. Decrypter and Shrink are for MPEG-2 DVDs. Try opening it in Virtualdub.

Oh, I see. I am trying to put the .mp4 onto dvd. What would be the easiest way to do that?

I get an error that says "Couldn't locate decompressor for format 'H264' (unknown).

I get this same error when using virtualdub and DIKO.

That's why I suggested AVIcodec or Gspot. They will tell you the exact codec needed, then you download and install it. Then VD should then be able to open the file. It's most likely this one:

To convert to DVD, easiest is probably VSO DivxToDVD or DIKO or similar, if they can understand the format. (After you have installed the proper codec.)

Best is to study the 'Guides' to the left. <<<< Many ways to do it.

I tried what you said, found the codecs but am still having a problem. When I try to use DIKO I am getting the error:

Avi source: could not decompress frame 0 (c:\program files\diko\temp\movie0.avs, line 32)

Does anyone know what this means!

x264 doesn't include a decoder. You would need to install ffdshow and make sure that AVC/h264 VfW decoding is enabled.

mp4 is NOT avi. mp4 and avi are two different containers.

I already had the ffdshow installed, the h264 decoding is enabled. Now what? I'm still having the same problem and now I'm really lost. All I want to do is to put the .mp4 file that I have on my computer onto a dvd. Is there a step by step guide for this, because if so I could not find it.

try first to converse the mp4 using the free tool Mp4UI

I wouldn't recommend mp4ui. It is outdated and buggy.

From your vdub error though you don't even have an mp4 file, you have an avi file containing AVC video.

If you have ffdshow enabled to decode AVC via VfW then vdub should open an avi containing AVC with the fourCC H264 just fine.

The 2nd and 3rd choices both mean enable it, allowing you to choose which codec library to use.
Set it to libavcodec.

(And make sure you are in the "VfW configuration" dialog.)
