In the output setting of the current TMPGEnc X-Press, there is a setting for "DC Component Precision" which goes from 8 to 10
and another setting for "Motion Search Precision" which goes from standard to highest (with error correction).
Can someone please explain what these actually do?
I use the software to convert AVI to Mpeg-2.....so i was wondering if i should be using the higher settings for best results. What settings do other people use for best results?
Thanks.![]()

DC Component Precision and Motion Search Precision set to the highest settings will give the best quality, at the cost of slower encoding.
"Soften blocknoise" is another setting you should look at if converting from AVI. -
DC component defines brightness in the picture frame. The number of bits used to represent its value defines smoothness of changing brightness with time: the faster it changes between frames, the more precision you need to keep it smooth.
Motion search precision defines the threshold of detecting difference between blocks of sequential frames (if the blocks are considered the same, zero motion vectors are defined). The higher the precision, the slower the encoding process (as already mentioned). -
Well i did some tests and when i use the Motion Search Precision in the High setting it takes longer to encode than the Video i encoded using the Highest (w/Error Correction)....It should be the other way around.
Maybe there is some bug in the software.
