I have watched a couple of MKV files with VLC player. However, I wanted to go from MKV to DVD. But before I do that, I want to know if MKV contains digital suround sound. If yes, how do I verify and what is the best software to burn MKV to DVD that will retain the digital suround sound?

One last question. What is the best player to play MKV file besides VLC player?

MediaInfo will tell you what video and audio codecs have been used in the MKV, and how they have been encoded.

ConvertXtoDVD (not free) will keep surround audio if it is compliant, and convert 5.1 AAC to 5.1 AC3.

I suspect AVStoDVD will also handle it, but I haven't tested it.

Older versions of FAVC also converted 5.1 AAC to 5.1 AC3, but I am not sure if the current release does.

Many thanks for the quick response. Wasn't there a free trial of ConvertXtoDVD?

So far what I've read on the web, it seemed like VLC player is most popular with MKV files. However, for some reason whenever I played 1080p files, the footage seemed freeze quite often and sometimes I'll see this white smearing or checked things on the screen. This issue happens only with 1080p and not 720 or lower resolution. Could it be due to my computer not able to handel it?

yes, but it's a couple years old and might not do what you want.

hard to tell, as you haven't filled in the computer specs in your profile.

There was a free version, but ConvertXtoDVD has moved on a lot since then, and the free version really does not compare to the payware version when it comes to MKV source. The freeware version doesn't do surround encoding, although it will pass through compliant audio.

MKV to DVD is not DVD to MKV. MOving you to our video conversion forum.

Try play your HD files using MPC-HC instead. Or together with CoreAVC.
