I ran across something a while ago that was USB on both ends and had a small box in the middle. Apparently, it is for transferring files from one computer to another. What are these things called?

I'd love to have one of these that was, oh, about 25 foot long.

USB cables are usually limited to 15 feet by the USB specification. But I do have a couple of powered USB entenders that can go 20 feet or more past the end of a existing USB cable. That might be one way to get your desired 25 foot range. They aren't expensive.
Here's some extenders: http://www.usbgear.com/USB-Extenders.html
And some USB data transfer devices from the same site: http://www.usbgear.com/USB-Data-Transfer.html
