The Philips 5990/92 are popular.
At the higher end you have the Oppo's.Recommends: Kiva.org - Loans that change lives.

I am very happy with my Phillips 5990 with a sony 46 inch flat screen TV, but I think the TV does do some enhancing/upconverting.
I do not think the OPPO's are worth the money.PAL/NTSC problem solver.

I'm into Toshiba and Pioneer myself. Then comes Samsung.

I got the Philips. But the upconverted video is not as good as DTV's HD broadcast. May be I really need to get a BluRay player?

Upscaling is not magic you know and it has limitations!
Broadcasters are using pro hardware for this, which is nothing close to the hardware the DVD Standalones are using for.
Anyway, the latest Toshiba DVD Standalones offers the best upscaling.
A BluRay standalone may offer you better upscaling to Philips, but not to a Thoshiba DVD with XDE technology. -

I know many standalones with superbly upscaling.
But the fact remains that the best upscaling consumer technology on the DVD standalones at the time being, is Toshiba's XDE.La Linea by Osvaldo Cavandoli

I hope you'll forgive me if I digress slightly.
Evidently neither of my HDTVs scales all that well. (42" Vizio plasma, 720p; and 47" Philips 1080p 120Hz LCD) So my Philips upconverting set-top makes a big difference when set to 720p. I even thought it looked marginally better than my old HTPC.
But I'm convinced my new HTPC displays DVDs better than the set-top, over either TV. The video card is nothing special, a $30 Radeon HD 2400, passive cooling. I use MPCHC and ffdshow, 720p60 over HDMI, same as before. My old card (AGP, Radeon 1650pro), and by old I mean 3-4 years old, cost 4 times as much, are newer cards that much better? Or am I imagining it?
Anyway, are we getting close to the limit of the picture quality that can be squeezed out of DVD?Pull! Bang! Darn!
