I want to be able to play a video file into a stream object so I can have another piece of software read the stream and perform a live encoding that is passed on to streaming server. I want to do this because it is quicker and easier then performing an actual conversion. Is this even possible? Using windows and linux here so either OS is viable for the solution.

Not that familiar with streaming, but you might look into VLC Media Player. It does streaming and a lot more. Also some conversions. And it should run on either platform.

Also take a look at some of of the streaming programs in our 'Tools' section: https://www.videohelp.com/tools/sections/video-streaming

Others here may be able to give you more specific advice.

    And welcome to our forums.

Sorry for posting in the wrong forum. The live encoding software needs a capture device so I needed a way to fake one from a video file. Thanks for the heads up on VLC and that tools sections. I've converted from various formats to others for a while now but never had any foray into capturing.
