I have the Phillips 5990 and an external 160 gig drive. Due to the limitations of FAT32 I have the drive partitioned in to a 40 gig drive and 120 gig drive. This works fine, but a friend of mine told me about this software called swiss knife
    http://www.compuapps.com/download/Swissknife/swissknife.htm
It can create a FAT32 partion larger than 40 gigs.

My friend did this but uses his drive on an Xbox 360. It works fine for him. I was wondering if it would be compatable to with the DVD player. My friend lives out of town so I can't just use his drive. I have mine full and don't mind reformating but I was just looking for a quick answer before moved 160 gigs of data (takes a while).

has anyone had any experence with this?

    Thanks

Do a search for "philips swissknife"

This has been covered ad nauseum in the forums (and heavily championed by redwudz).

Swissknife works fine with a 500GB drive and a single partition, probably larger drives also. And they work fine with the Philips. Just stick to the 648 maximum files per partition.

    And welcome to our forums.

Works good with my 500GB Iomega drive. And I used swiss knife, it's the best free software out there for formatting.

The only thing I don't like is the hard drive won't spin down if I shut the dvd player off, so I have to flip the switch on the back. On my 360 it powers down when I shut the 360 off.

I set it all up and tested last night.
Works like a champ, but it took forever to backup 160 gigs to I could partion the drive.

    Thanks for the replys.
