Just wondering if I could add some free app that would tell me what speed, say, Netflix streaming was arriving at. Any recommendations/tips?

  2. Try NetMeter. It shows upload and download speeds.
    Get it here:

    http://www.metal-machine.de/readerror/index.php?PHPSESSID=6654bc0d12147ef48076b77a118f...ction=tpmod;dl

No installation necessary. Save the executable to a location of your choice and run it
It can sit on top of other windows and I normally park it in the bottom right of screen.
Right click the tray icon>Exit NetMeter if you wish to stop it.

Thanks Mike, just what I wanted! Out of curiosity, what dl speeds are you seeing in the UK? I'm getting a max of 200 KiB/s on streaming content, which is enough to avoid buffering delays but not enough for HD...

Sgt, you might be amused that a local illiterate neon sign maker here actually made a bar sign that read Budwizzer

    I don't use netflix.
I normally use NetMeter for monitoring uploading video/downloading video speeds on YouTube.
