  1. After exchanging a 30-episode DVD disc set where one disc was defective, I didn't feel like going through all the episodes again to make sure the 2nd DVD set was ok, so I tried to run the discs through Nero's DVD SPEED program (both, SCAN DISC, and DISC QUALITY), thinking it would pick up any defects on the replacement set, if there were any. Well, what a surprise, when ALL of the discs showed more than 99% defective.

So I tried several other brand-new commercial discs that were also never played even once, and ALL showed better than 90% defective, while the DISC QUALITY program shut down altogether because of disc errors!
What another surprise, when I tested a couple of Verbatim +R discs, that were burned on another burner, and they quickly zipped through showing 100% GOOD on SCAN DISC, and with only a few minor PI errors on the DISC QUALITY test!

Can anyone explain this?? - is there another (perhaps free) program that is more accurate and makes more sense than that?

  2. Pressed discs don't work properly with Nero CD DVDSpeed,it's designed to scan writable media.
Another factor is your reader, some are more accurate than others.

I tried a different reader, and I tried another program called "Emsa Diskcheck."
Same thing. It found errors on every single folder of the commercial discs, while the burnt Verbatim discs were 100% error-free.

No, it's a legit, store-bought, and sealed DVD set issued by Warner Brothers Entertainment Inc. Distributed by Warner Home Video, Burbank, CA 91522 U.S.A.
As mentioned, the other commercial DVDs tested were also legit, store-bought, and sealed U.S.A.-made DVDs (Twentieth Century Fox, Paramount Pictures...).
ALL crawled along at a snail's pace in both programs when tested, while the Verbatims scanned very quickly and error-free.
