missing sound

I have acquired a file 3 times from different sources. Each time I open these files I see a decent video, but the soundtrack doesn't play. The file is completely silent. My speakers work, I can hear audio from other sources/files.
I checked with Video Inspector to see if there was possibly some codec I didn't have to hear the sound from these files.
Video Inspector says that the file was complete, and, that I had all the codecs needed for this file. But to be sure I downloaded & installed another audio codec file. Still couldn't hear anything. Thought it might've been the player I used to try to see & hear these files, so I went from WMP to Media Player Classic, and, even downloaded and installed VLC player. Still no audio. From comments I've read at the sources from where I've obtained these files, others have had no problem at least hearing something from these files, so why can't I?

What does GSpot say about the video?

I'm not sure what information from GSpot you're looking for. Basically it says that the video was compressed(?) using XVID, and, that there are two compatible codes for that portion installed. The Audio is 0x0055 (mp3) ID'd as MPEG-1, layer three, running at 128/kbs in 64/channel stereo, CBR, with 4 compatible codecs installed.
Curiouser I converted/burned this file to DVD, and, when I played it back I could hear the soundtrack. So obviously I must not have the right codec to hear the unconverted soundtrack, or, my burning program (VSO ConvertX must have somehow amplified it to make it "hearable."

Strange one. VLC uses its own codecs so if it doesn't work with VLC then I don't know what is happening.

Could it be that there are multiple audio streams in your AVI?

I am as clueless as to why the "raw" files soundtrack doesn't seem to play when I open it, but is there after conversion/burning, as you seem to be. Again, both Video Inspector, and, G-Spot, said I had compatible codecs for the audio track installed, so if your idea of multiple track is valid, why wouldn't at least one of them work with the codecs I have installed?
I guess it just a mystery that will have to be left unsolved, until/unless someone smarter in this area than I, can figure it out.

Could it be something as simple as your Windows Volume Control being muted for a particular input? If it plays on disc, but not with a software media player, perhaps the WAV channel is muted or turned down.

Just a shot in the dark, and I could be completely wrong. But check that out, just in case.

I took a look at the AVI you sent me. I have no problem to play it but there is only sound in one channel (the left). Is your computer rigged OK? Have you tried to play it with headphones instead of your speakers (connected to the computer, not to the speakers)? Have you checked that the cables to the speakers are connected OK? If the connectors aren't plugged in deep enough you might get only one channel and chances are that you will get the silent channel for both speakers...
