Hello, I wonder if anybody knows wether it's possible to add two or three .avi-files
of approximately 6-700MB (or less) to a project and get a functioning DVD out
    of it?

    Yours ever,

However the longer the combined running time, the lower the bitrate use for encoding, and consequently the lower the quality.

To further amplify, the size of the source(s) is not relevant when converting to DVD.

I don't get it....how can it not be relevant?

More accurately the filesize of the source is not relevant. The length (running time) of the video, and the target filesize are the only relevant figures when computing the bitrate. To fit more running time into the same space, you need a lower bitrate, so the bitrate (and therefore the filesize) of the source is meaningless.

Further, if you're converting from highly compressed avi (xvid, divx, etc), then you'll need a lot more bitrate to maintain similar quality. Again, the target filesize and the running time will determine the bitrate, but the encoder determines the quality at a given bitrate.

Edit: The only time filesize will be relevant is if you're just burning the files as-is to a DVD+/-R as data, in which case you're not actually converting, and not all DVD players will play them.
