I've got Vista 64 Ultimate. My Xvid files all used to work fine, now they all stutter on playback (video stutters, audio is fine). This happens in Windows Media Player and Media Player Classic. The files work fine in MPlayer, so I thought it was a codec issue, so I uninstalled ffdshow and installed a newer version with no luck. I tried just the Xvid codec with the same results. The only thing I have installed lately was an update for iTunes, so I tried removing iTunes and it made no difference.
Anyone have any idea how I can get this working again?

    Is it JUST xvid videos?

And check in mpc what decoder it actually uses when you play the xvid, under Play->Filters->. It might be something else that decodes the xvid or something.

It's doing the same thing for divx, mpeg and wmv files (except wmv files work in wmp) and mkv files won't play at all. It shows ffdshow video decoder as the filter.

What's really strange is all of these files work in MPlayer, which seems to be using a built in ffdshow.

  4. The problem is likely in the video renderer. Did you upgrade the graphics card drivers? Try different video renderers in MPC. View -> Options -> Playback -> Output...

I found the problem, one of my RAM sticks was bad.

It's pretty impressive that you could have a bad stick of RAM and the only symptom was video stuttering.

Well it looks like none of the ram is bad, but when it's in triple channel mode it does this. I don't seem to have any other problems though.
