    Hi,

I downloaded an avi and when i start it there is some distortion or what looks like flickering boxes in sections of the screen. They seem to stop after the first 15 sec... why could this be happening? could it be that the full avi wasnt downloaded correctly? one time when i played it the flickering happened and then it sort of froze and then jumped part of the scene...? The full avi seems to be playable though...

    cheers!

What are you playing it through?

Try VLC media player or GOM media player, they seem to handle AVIs better than WMP.

COuld be some stuff up in the conversion the original person made when they uploaded it.

Playing AVIs through my media playing hard drive often has this freeze jump scene problem and occasionally has a flickering thing at the start for 30 sec or so.

Can usually fix both by reencoding on my PC and then it plays fine.

If it really bugs you give that a try, works often for me.

im using media player classic (MPC)...

when you say reencode, do you mean using something like divxfix?

this wouldnt be due to missing a part of the avi or a corrupt part? or would it not play at all in that case?

Recently I have been using MediaCoder (find it in the tools section to the right if it doesnt link) to re encode AVI files not playing properly, once you adjust the quality settings to your liking it has a batch encode feature so for example I had a whole season of AVIs I reencoded, set it up once, selected all the files and come back when its done doing all the files at once.

I dont know about the corrupt/missing part, but for me it has been something in the way it is encoded as reencoding fixes all the problems which would be impossible if the parts were physically missing.

Give it a try and you will know one way or the other if the information is in the file.
