Does the quality of the CD-R matter?

Does the quality of the CD-R affect the quality of the VCD burned? Right now I am just using some no name brand I got at Compusa.

Would it better if I got some name brand CD-R's to burn my VCD's and SVCD's with?

If so, what kind should I got with?

some would say yes...but to be honest I have tried almost every type out there and see very little difference.
Now,I should say that I am not using an expensive DVD player (which seem to play just about everything anyway).
I have read that there are only 4 major companies out there that actually manufacture the CD's then the distributer/seller put their own label/sticker on it(kinda like cassette tapes).

I think the quality of the CD-R only matters over time. From information I have read the gold CD-R's hold up the best over time. If you are going to archive something to be viewed years in the future, I would use the gold.
After searching for gold CD-R's, the only place I have found that has them is Kodak at their online store. Hope this helps.

I used the cheapest CD-R's I could find. With only one brand (lenco) I had problems because the CD-R contained too many errors at the end - the edge of the CD. Using an even cheaper brand solved that, together with not trying to put 80 minutes on a cd...

My player Apex AD1500, was not reading 80 minute SVCD's on generic "Staples" brand. the last 1/3 of the disk would start to have digital noise.

I switched to "Japan" made Sony disks and now the player will read the full 80 minutes without any noise.

I've occasionally had trouble with the cheapest of the cheap (various brands, but usually manufactured by Ritek or is it Rit-ecchhh).

The ones I am using are silver ad blue on the writable side. They don't even say what country they are made in!

If you have a Sony DVD, it DOES matter! I have found only one brand that works flawless with my Sony NS-300 DVD and that's Vivastar (Swiss made). Most other CD-R's, barnd or no-name, just won't work!

I have also heard that there are problems with some PIONEER DVD-players.

(Of course I'm referring to set-top DVD players, not computer-ones)

I gues that is the case. I bought my APEX AD800 @walmart.com and it plays my cheap-o CD-R's. I just need to get my image quality better. I started with using smaertripper,dvd2avi and tmpg and the images were not that great.
So I now I switched to dvd2svcd with the cce, and I am now waiting on it to finish. I set it @4 pass, so its taking about 13hours so far.
Is this alot of time for it to complete? I have a AMD 800mhz Duron w/128mb of ram.
