I am burning DVD copies of some home VHS movies. I am using Ulead's DVD MovieFactory to author and burn. I am creating menus with the software. My question is what is what is the difference in DVD-R general purpose and DVD-R authoring discs? Which one would be best for what I am doing? I have noticed when I create a DVD-R using a general purpose DVD-R that it does not perform too well in my PC DVD player or my standalone. The ones I create without menus seem to fare better.

    Thanks in advance...

  2. I believe that DVD_R AUTHORING discs are when you want to make master DVDs that get sent to a DVD duplication plant....

for domestic DVD use, general DVD-R is all you need.

avoid unbranded DVD-Rs though, as I have found they arent readable in any DVD player, only the PC dvd-rom drives...

    buggs.

  4. Authoring disks also do NOT work in the A03, the only work in the the SCSI Pioneer DVD-R model ( forgot what model it was ) that was the predecessor to the A03, and as someone pointed out Authoring disks are for DVD Masters for replication.

As for playback it's probally your media and not the program, I use DVD Movie Factory only to Author and burn, but use TMPEnc for covnersion to mpeg 2. I use various DVD-RW media and DVD-R, so far I have use only Verbatim DVD-RW and Pioner DVD-RW, but for DVD-R i have used TDK, Memorix, Pioneer, Apple and Great Quality. so far so good, am still evaluating media but so far the Apples are a real good buy considering how well they have performed for me and the price ( 5 dollars per discs in a 5 pack ). I have 3 DVD units as my test best ( 2 Sony's and a Pioneer ) with the Sony's being the real mules as they are not as good as my Pioneer on playback, so if it can play in my Sony, it can play on anything both DVD-RW and DVD-R.

It's handy ot keep a few DVD-RW around for test burns to see if everything is the way you want it before finally committing to DVD-R, thus eleimnating disappointments and coasters.

    Mikerios,

Thanks for the info. The Apple's work OK in the Pioneer burner? Do you suggest I get them from the Apple site or do you know of another.

    Thanks for the info.

  6. I'm sure the Apple blanks work fine in the Pioneer burner because the Apple "Superdrive" is a rebadged Pioneer A03.

  7. yes either directly from apple or from an apple dealer or retailer ( Fry's carries mostly pc stuff, with some apple stuff and thus they carry the media, but they also carry other media for which they do not sell the hardware end ).

But yes Apple media works great. The other user is correct, Apple DVD-R drive is a rebadged A03, though the first Superdrives were not the A03, but another Pioneer DVD-R only drive ( scsi ) which uses different media than the A03. It funny that even Sony uses the Pioneer in there VIAO computer even Sony is one of the founders of DVD+RW but I am sure playback compatibility issues on home ( and computers ) is a issue with Sony and so they are probally sticking with DVD-R /RW until DVD+RW takes a bigger hold on the market.

  8. DVD authoring discs can only be burned on Authoring drives, just as DVD-r/rw discs can only be burned on DVD-R drives.
It should be pointed out, that the term "Authoring" as an adjective, i.e. Authoring Discs/Drives should NOT be confused with "Authoring" as a verb, i.e. Authoring a disc These usages mean completely different things
