I have just started looking at DVD RW burners such as HP, Pioneer or Philips. I have previously played around with creating VCD's by converting AVI files to MPEG of footage from my digital cam. Wit this first generation of DVD burners can you burn a DVD from an AVI file that you can play on your stand alone DVD player. I recognize there are compatability problems with certain DVD players. I can deal with that. I just want to know whether you still have to go through the conversion process on TEMPEnc for example. Thanks for any feedback you can give me.

I'll try and reply as best I can.
Bear in mind that this is advice from a newbie, and may be completely untrue (and anybody here who knows better is welcome to contradict me).
AFAIK, you cannot burn a .avi file driectly to a DVR-R, DVD+RW or whatever and expect a stand-alone to play it. It must first be converted to MPEG 2. The thing is that some of the DVD-Authoring programs will convert it for you. So whereas you may not have to use TMPEnc, the conversion process stil takes place (and a fair deal of time).
Right, guys?
