  1. A few questions please...
    1.Thinking of upgrading and wondering how it will do...
    Also this spyware stuff on XP how easy to bypass...
    Have they cracked XP yet??(Im not asking for a crack, just wondering..)

    2.Also, I'm building a new Athlon 1.4ghz/128DDRRAM...can anyone tell me about how long it should take to encode a 2hr movie in normal quality?
    Currently im at 14hrs on my 533k6-2

    I have home xp on my new hp pavillion. It takes me about an hour and 15 minutes to encode 70 minutes. And the burn of that takes about 5 minutes with vcdeasy. In case you don't know, I had to get an aspi layer because I was told xp does not have it. I use all the programs you mentioned and it works well.

    I'm using a P -4 1.7 g and have 512 mg mem and this is a XP machine. The only thing I had to do was upgrade my ASPI layer. It takes me 4 to 5 hours to encode average movie. If your planning on going XP get more memory, alot more memory. My option is go Win 2000 Prof. of if you have to go XP, get the Prof. ver.

    I am using that setup and encoding takes less than real time. I have an AMD 1.47 and 512 DDR. It should take you at or less than real time if you are doing the DDR RAM. I used forceASPI on my system. I was still able to rip before using it and haven't tried to rip since. My rip speed varied from 3.5X to around 6.8X before forceASPI. I have other problems though. I can't encode non-standard sizes, which is a post of mine somewhere else. The short version is that I am forced to use 480x480 or 720x480 for MPEG-2, I can't go down to 352x240 and make nonstandard. When I do I get no picture.

    I have been running XP on my AMD 1600+xp machine for a couple months now, outside of a few hardware glitches with winxp all has been great, never had a single lockup running any video software and I have ran just about everything. I have 512mb ddr ram and it takes about 2 hours to encode a 1.5 hour movie in 4:3, if it is 16:9 it takes about 1:50 to do it.

    you guys R 4gettting 2 mention the type of encode, VCD or SVCD...
    352x480 or 480x480 or 720x480, etc.
    as each of these will vary your
    encoding time.

    for me, my last 1 hour capture took less then 3 hours to encode to an
    xSVCD. These are my specs for this "time" on my old PC setup:
    * Athlon T-Brd 900MHz w/ PC133 128mb ram
    * ATI-TV Wonder capture card
    * Virtualdub frameserved to TMPG
    * xSVCD(352x480/CQ_VBR1850/2500)

    On my current system, I'd don't have any real specs for a 1 hour
    capture and encode "time". Sorry!
    But, about the only difference is my CPU chip. I went from a (above)
    to an "XP 1700+" and I could sware
    that my encoding times have NOT
    changed!!, based on NO change in my process.

    Afternoon all.

    Again, we all (you all) need to be more open with your encoding times!
    When you post your encoding times here, it's a bit missleading for
    some of us, cause you leave out any filtering and at what resolution for your encoding that may be the cause of your long encoding times.

    So, when someone says, 12 hours, then U need to mention if you use:
    * "filters", and which ones, level settings...
    * what "resolutions"

    Otheriwise it's not a true or fair assessment of encoding times for us post readers. ie, 1.4ghz takes 12 hours, while another 1.4ghz takes 2 hours. So, as you can see below, ...are my complete specs for an encoding project.

    My last 1 hour capture took less then 3 hours to encode to an
    xSVCD. These are my specs for this "time" on my OLD PC setup:

    * Athlon T-Brd 900MHz w/ PC133 128mb RAM
    * ATI-TV Wonder capture card
    --> capture: 352x480
    * VIRTUALdub frameserved to TMPG
    * xSVCD (352x480 / CQ_VBR.70.1850.2500) (MPEG-2)
    * Filters(VD) = Sharpen 3
    * Filters(TMPG) = NONE
    * ENCODING time: < 3 hours

    jonnabj, based on your 1.4ghz cpu, I would say that U used a few
    filters in your enocodes, hense the 12 hour encoding time.

    Maybe we all shoudl use this format when we post specs and things.
    It would clear up any doubts or confusions/assumtions left in our
    minds!

  9. I've got :

    A P4 1700
    1024 MEG RAM
    16 X DVD ROM
    24 X BURNER

    On an average 100 min movie rip :

    Smart ripper takes between 8 to 10 minutes to rip the DVD

    DVD2AVI takes around 12 minutes to do its stuff ! ( Project Save )

    And TMPGenc ( VCD Encode ) takes 2Hours 20 Mins.....

    Hope this has helped.

    and I also have to drop the 'winaspi32.dll' drivers into Windows\Sytem32
