  1. O.K. heres one that is becoming very painful to solve.

I've had Sony DW22a that came with my computer for about 5 years.

It will burn and play dvds , but for some reason it all of a sudden will not
    burn or play cds.

I figured drives are cheap so I bought an LG dvd / cd writer installed it and
it does the same thing ! - Same problem 2 different drives !

I'm losing my mind , and ready to tear out hair.!! - lol.

Future shop said could be spyware.

Ran 3 different programs , and found a few bugs and deleted them.

I've Un-installed Nero and re- installed which they aslo said to try , with no luck.

If anyone has any ideas Please PLease help !

    Thanks in advance !

Regardless of burning capability, it should be able to read CD's. If you insert a CD, can you browse the contents using Windows Explorer or My Computer?

  3. It could be a number of things, and no doubt you'll get several suggestions. Try those suggestions, and if they fail, try this:

Important This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
322756 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322756/ ) How to back up and restore the registry in Windows

To resolve this problem, remove the affected filter drivers. To do this, follow these steps:

    1. Click Start, type regedit in the Start Search box, and then click okay.

    2. Locate, and then click the following registry subkey:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Caution There can be many instances of the registry subkey that is mentioned in step 2. You must make sure that you are in the appropriate registry subkey before modifying the UpperFilters and the LowerFilters values. To verify that you are in the appropriate registry subkey, make sure that the Default data value is DVD/CD-ROM and the Class data value is CDROM.
    3. In the right pane, right-click UpperFilters, and then click Delete.
    4. Click Yes to confirm the removal of the UpperFilters registry entry.
    5. In the right pane, right-click LowerFilters, and then click Delete.
    6. Click Yes to confirm the removal of the LowerFilters registry entry.
    7. Exit Registry Editor, and then restart the computer.

Note After you remove the UpperFilters registry entry and the LowerFilters registry entry, you may lose functionality in certain programs such as CD recording programs. In this scenario, you must reinstall any affected programs. If the problem recurs, contact the program vendor to determine whether an update is available for the program.

    --------------------------------

Done carefully and accurately, the above will do no harm, other than requiring re-install of your burning software. And make sure you use the NeroCleanTool to remove any traces of Nero from your registry first. Corrupted filter drivers can display varying symptoms, including: inability to access CDs and/or DVDS, inability to burn discs, etc. The only solution is to delete the corrupted filters. (I've had it happen to me once, when I installed Nero without uninstalling RecordNow first. I've also fixed it on a few machines belonging to others.) I don't suppose when you installed Nero, you installed InCD as well?

Anyway, please post back telling us what worked for you

First things first before people start editing registry values of any kind.

You replaced the drive and it to has same issue ... ok ... this should have told you the next step

The data cable ... replace it (its also old)

  5. Some dvd's come with anti copy protection and as soon as you put them in the files loads and will not let you copy and has the same adverse effect on the drive. Check task manager for some unusual exe and kill the process. The worst case is rootkit and kind of impossible to detect and easy solution is to reformat and reinstall. There could be another reason, if you recently added some sort of hard disk or external stuff the drive letters could coincide and blankout your drive in this case map your drive to a higher letter so when windows automatically assigns they won't collide. Lastly I suggest to put a new good cable for the drive make sure it is plugged in correctly too if it doesn't have the notch.
    So
1- Change cable 2- map drive to another letter like X or Z. 3- Check task manager kill unknown process and regclean.
4- run rootkit revealer from sysinternals or AVG.
5- Reboot use a data cd or dvd no commercial disc, audio or video stuff see if it works. copy some file to HD.

Yep, like I said at the outset. But it's worth emphasizing: *don't* try it until everything else fails.

Bad cabling does fit the symptoms and is easy to check. But again, if you uninstall Nero, you should use this:
