can you put avi. on dvd-r and play it in a dvd player is there anything that tells me how to do it thank you

By AVI, I'm assuming you mean DIVX, and not ACTUAL AVI.
No. Only computers will play DIVX, although burning them onto a DVD-R will let you fit a few of them onto one disc.
But If you actually meant an AVI, then the answer is still no, for the same reasons."I think I know exactly what I mean, when I say it's a Shpadoinkle day!"
