I have an OPPO 981HD.
The instruction in the "hack" section say to modify the 935.BIN file with 970FMT.EXE.
There is also a 981.BIN file in the firmware.
Question is, when I followed the direction, modified the 935.BIN file and burned ONLY the 935.BIN to the CD I got an "unknown disk" error. The instructions SEEM to say to only modify and burn the 935.BIN file.
When I burned a CD with MODIFIED 935.BIN and UNMODIFIED 981.BIN file it loaded the firmware but I'm not sure if what I did was correct or if the patch was installed. The "instructions" seem to be for the Oppo 971.
DO I need to MODIFY the 981.BIN for the OPPO 981HD instead of the 935.BIN?
Do I need to only modify the 935.bin but put both files on the cd?
Sorry .. I'm confused. Once again I have a OPPO 981HD.
Please clarify the steps for this model (yes, I red the "instructions but they are for the 970)

Have you tried contacting Oppo directly? Those who have done so have reported that their customer support is very good.
-
You mean to ask them how to hack their player with modified software in order to bypass HDCP? I think not.

Oops! I thought it was a multi-region thing. Didn't really pay attention to that HDCP mention. My bad. Thanks MisterEd, and you are quite correct that my advice will NOT work.

LOL .. Thanks, but maybe my OP wasn't clear. Let me try again:
Has anyone applied the hack to the Oppo 981HD (not the 970 or 971 or 980)?
If you have please reply to these questions:
Did you patch ONLY the 935.BIN file?
What is the 981.BIN file?
When you created the CD to install the patch what files did you put onto the CD?
Only the 935.BIN file?
Both 935.BIN and 981.BIN files?
When I make a CD with ONLY 935.BIN the player won't apply the firmware.
When I make a CD with BOTH 981.BIN & 935.BIN the firmware loads but I am not sure if that is the correct procedure because the instructions say to only burn the 935.BIN file to CD but it won't load it.

That model uses only hdmi so if you beat the hdcp your TV will not hand shake and will not show anything. You should have bought 980H so you get componant out and get 480i or P and if TV has up scale you would see it better ... if TV is small 480 and above will look almost the same that is if your dvd is recorded in high resolution, a crapy movie will look worse .... If dvd upscales you definitely need hdmi and it is a 2 way hand shake.

Can't someone answer who has actually done this? Every answer so fa has been incorrect. Everyone is guessing.
Hello! If by removing HDCP the TV will not handshake and get a picture then why is there a patch to REMOVE HDCP for the 981HD?
The actual FACTORY firmware has 2 files 935.BIN and 981.BIN not "just 1 file."
I "should have" bought a 980H? LOL.
Early HDMI ports (like my old Sony XBR) were not HDCP compatible or if they were some had issues with the HDCP handshake which is why the patch turns it off.
Now once again. If someone has ACTUALLY DONE THIS HACK on a 981HD please help.
No one else need reply.

Nice first post Balthazaar. Calling people inept is sure to encourage lots of replies.

I ultimately solved my problem by returning the 981 and getting a Sony Blu-Ray player for $10 more (after 30% Microsoft Live rebate).
