  1. Hi all. I noticed several comments on this site that attested to the successful hack for this DVD player, though I believe they are all referring to the Region 1 player. Will the same hack work for the Region 2 player, or am I out of luck? Thanks in advance.

So if you are in Region 1, Determined from your location, "USA", which is region 1, why would "you" be out of luck if it does not work on a region 2 player ?

A friend of mine gifted me this player because I needed a region 2 player. Perhaps he was mistaken.

Short answer: I am a huge film buff. I have DVDs in regions 1,2,3 and 4. Since my region 1 JVC player does not seem to have a hack code, I hoped my OPPO (which I was told was region 2) could be hacked to play all regions. That is why I would be "out of luck" if the region 1 hack code did not work for the region 2 player.

I still don't know how you possibly could have got hold of a "region 2" Oppo player.

ms.zebra - I think you are making invalid assumptions. As far as we know, Oppo ONLY makes region 1 and region A (BluRay) BluRay players. Your friend probably got you this player because he knows that it can be made region free. However, as far as I know all Oppo players now require you to change the hardware to make them region free. If your friend knows enough to have gotten you the player, he probably knows whether you need a hardware hack (or if it was already done by seller) or if your model is old enough that you can just change the firmware and enter some codes to make it region free.

Note that many DVD players have no hack codes at all. In fact most players sold in the USA and Canada have no such codes. And we've had reports that just because a hack code works on a player sold in one part of the world, it may not work at all on the same model sold in another part of the world because of differences in hardware between the models. But in any event your best option is to talk to the sender and get more info from him about what exactly he sent you and what you need to do to make it work in region free mode.

Wasn't Oppo famous for "region free out of the box" DVD players before they switched to selling only Blu Ray players?

  9. You know what, guys, my friend had already hacked it to Region 0 for me. I was just confused because one of my Region 3 films would not play. But the setting is correct, so.... I guess I should have checked that before posting a new thread, but I appreciate the fast responses and assistance. Thanks again.

Good news. I'd blame the region 3 disc issue on a problem with that disc. Be warned that some region 1 DVDs won't play on players set to region 0 and the only fix is to temporarily set the player to region 1. This is known as RPC and some studios use it to deliberately try to prevent playback on region free players. Gotta love Hollywood.
