OK cant figure this out.. please help me.

Got AVI file loaded into ConvertX 3.2 (something)... the AVI is a 4:3 file playing on my widescreen LCD 22"monitor it has black bars on the side (how it should be).

when I finish converting with ConvertX, and play it on my standalone Samsung HD860 and 32" LCD Samsung TV, it plays it FULL SCREEN. why dont black bars on the sides appear? The picture looks stretched this way that ConvertX converted it to dvd.

I have tried various settings before converting.. I have tried all settings to on my dvd player (changed to 4:3.. letterbox and pan/scan option tested).. What am i doing wrong?

What settings would get me 4:3 with black bars on the side on a widescreen 32"+ tv?

Options in ConvertX --- DVD specs
Format = AUTO (PAL or NTSC)
DVD Resolution = FULL D1 , Broadcast D1, Half D1, SIF, Auto based on imput
    Aspect Ratio = 16:9, 4:3

I have tried AUTO format, FULL D1 and Broadcast D1, and 4:3.

  2. How's the DVD look when played on the computer? Is it stretched there also? If not, then you've got a wrong setting either on the DVD player or the TV set.

Check your picture settings. My Samsung does not automatically change the aspect ratio when playing 4:3 material. I have to change it manually with the remote. On my Series 6 the button is marked p. size and scrolls through the various display modes.

The 16:9 output setting in CXD should look correct (maintain proper AR) on any set (old and new). I use CXD set at 16:9 with 4:3 sources and they always come out with side bars on my WS Panasonics and Vizios.

The really annoying thing is that my old 4:3 TV had 16:9 switching and happily went back and forth between the two states as needed, without any intervention from me. Like most things, it is two steps forward, one step back.

Ya,the older 4:3 tvs you didnt have to do anything with them, just the hdtv's i have had to set up in customers homes, none of them would switch to 4:3 back to 16:9 or vice versa on their own.

No problem here with my Sony. Whether the DVD is 4:3 or 16:9, it plays with the correct AR.

  10. It's a Sony Bravia 16:9 HDTV. Whether 4:3 or 16:9 DVD, 4:3 480i or 16:9 1080i/720p broadcast, I never have to change any settings. For broadcast TV, in the remote control setting that controls the AR, it automatically switches between "Normal" and "Wide" depending if what's being broadcast is 4:3 or 16:9. When watching DVDs it's always on "Wide" because the player adds pillar bars if it's a 4:3 DVD and always sends a 16:9 picture to the TV set.

It's also possible to screw up the AR by making people look fat so you can lose the pillar bars and fill the screen with 4:3 sources, or do that thing where the center of the picture looks OK but the sides are even more stretched out, but of course only idiots do that.
