  1. I just bought some 700 Meg 10x Memorex CD-RW, but Nero 5.5.5.6 (as well as DirectCD) will only give me the option to burn up to 4x speed.

I pop in a 650 Meg 10x Imation CD-RW amd the same software gives me the 8x and 10x speed options.

So, is there something wrong with these 700 Meg disks? Do these burning packages detect the possible speeds, or are they pre-programmed in a database?

my burner is a Plextor 16/10/40A

All I know is, I payed extra for the 10x disks, and I cant use the extra speed...

It's your CD Burner. Your firmware may be outdated... Because in each firmware, it contains a list of CDR/CDRW media information. So technially, your Plex 16x Firmware may be outdated.

Also, there may be other reasons, so don't rule this out the exact reason. But it may be the reason...

  4. Thanks for the suggestion, but I tried that already...

The latest firmware on plextors site is 1.04...stuck that in this afternoon and...

No Change. 2x and 4x are still the only options in Nero (1, 2, and 4 in DirectCD).

  5. Well, I got an e-mail from Plextor tech support that said: PLEASE USE ANYTHING OTHER THAN MEMOREX - THEY JUST DON'T WORK - WE HAVE MORE PROBLEMS WITH MEMOREX THAN ALL OTHER BRANDS COMBINED.

So, I'm dumping the Memorex and going with TDK 700 Meg 4x...But It's a damn shame to have a 10x burner and only be able to find 4x 700 Meg media.

  6. It's strange. I'm using the same Plextor burner and the same CD-RWs as well as the Memorex CD-Rs (24X multispeed) and haven't had a problem. I can always burn up to the max.

  7. I agree it's strange, but I've wasted enough time on this already...I've got the latest Plextor firmware and the newest version of Nero...still stuck at 4x...

The 700 Meg TDK's seem to be working fine, so I'll just wait for some other brand to release a 10x 700 Meg CD-RW...the Memorex go back tomorrow.
