Until recently, I was able to record all channels from my cable provider. Now when I try to record movies or any channel for that matter, I get a box saying "this program is not able to be recorded" Why all of a sudden can I not record? What can I do to be able to record movies again? Is the cable company now encrypting through the cable box? would appreciate any help, thanks.

  2. it is most likely your cable company encrypting the signal, it will be more wide spread when the digital broadcasts begin next year.

If when you say you "try to record movies" you are referring to HBO, Showtime, etc. these channels are often encrypted by cable companies. You don't say what your recording device is, but all current DVD recorders sold in North America will obey "do not record" signals from cable companies. Local channels are NOT supposed to be encrypted by law, but all cable companies are incompetent, it's just a question of how much. Perhaps where you are your cable company has simply screwed up and is sending out "do not record" signals for everything when they are not really supposed to do that. You could try calling them, but note that all cable companies have pretty incompetent, poorly paid staff so you may need to ask to speak to a manager. I've heard of some major network (Fox, CBS, NBC, ABC) shows that give out a "record once, do not copy" kind of signal, but your recording device should record these shows. assuming that your cable company hasn't screwed things up.

I have a Sony DVD recorder, up until very recently (3 -4 weeks ago) I was to record any/all movies channels. never really tried to record abc, cbs.etc until it started not letting me record from HBO,TMC,TCM.etc
I have a rather large dvd collection, and figured since I pay for all the premium channels why not get my monies worth, so almost a year ago i bought the dvd recorder, and had no problems recording until the beginning of this month. any suggestions?

I have Satellite - I record the programs on my DVR and then transfer them to my DVD Recorder. I haven't had any problem recording anything this way

I gave up on Cablevision and their nonsense years ago

It is not downloading - more like dubbing. I connect the DVD Recorder to the DVR and play the program and record it to a blank DVD, but you can also record it while the program is being broadcast - just start the DVD Recorder manually, or with its timer (just like a VCR). My DVD Recorder does not have a Hard Drive built in - I do any editing on the computer afterwards.

I haven't had any - the DVR records directly off the satellite (Dish Network), it never complained about not being able to record anything. I record a lot of movies off of TCM and FOX Movie Channel - No commercials, unedited, and original aspect ratio. I also record series TV shows - I edit out the commercials on the computer, then author to DVD. I only record on DVD+RW discs on the recorder.

Please don't forget that I am using a completely different system - I do not know what results you will have with a Cablevision DVR. I love my satellite system, and I will never go back to any cable system - ever!

I also hope that Dish Network does not change the way that their system works!
