  1. I have a VCD which won't play in my friend's DVD player. What do I use to rip the mpg1 file out so I can make a DVD for them. I have Smart Ripper, does that work for VCD's?

  2. You need to copy the file AVSEQ01.DAT (or similar name) on the VCD in a dir called MPEGAV (I think) to the HD & rename it to .MPG
Use TMpeg to load the .MPG file in and save it in MPEG2 format & then convert to DVD format & burn back to CDR or DVD-R if you're lucky enough to have a DVD writer.
You'll need to find some guides on converting MPEG2 to DVD format.
Don't expect quality to be great. I converted a CDi to VCD using Tmpeg and it's OK, but obviously not as good as the original.
Anyway, all this presumes your friends DVD player can read CDR or DVD-R. Maybe the problem is it can't read CDR/DVD-R rather than not being able to play VCD. You should try a commercially produced VCD first.

  3. Actually there's no need to re-encode the MPEG1 file. You can burn it to a DVDR (see guide to left) but will need to convert the audio from 44.1k -> 48k. The quaility won't get any better, but it won't take a hit either this way.

Can your friends DVD player read DVDR discs? Check the DVD players list to the left.

You need to use VCD Gear to convert the dat file to an mpg. Then re-author the VCD

d/l it in the TOOLS section
