You could get a tivo but you still will have to pay a small monthly fee for their service.

Thanks Freebird....I have direct tv dvr currently, with no means of permanent recording to dvd. I was wondering if they make a dvr that has a dvd recorder built in, that would record the signal from the tv antenna once it has been converted to digital by the new box you can get.....I guess your saying thats not possible?

Dvd recorders with built in hard drive

Not quite the same functionality as the dvr you have from directv but should work for what you want. Record over-the-air to hard drive. Burn to disc if you want.

Also you might consider changing the title to something a little more descriptive. If you click the edit button in your first post and change the title from dvr to something like "Recommendations for OTA DVR/DVD Recorder" you will probably get more responses.

  5. Your DVR will need an ATSC tuner to receive OTA digital TV in the USA.

Sorry I don't have that specific information to offer you but I do have an additional piece of advice. For simplicity sake make sure it has an INTERNAL ATSC digital tuner. That will save space and complexity if you go this route.

Many dvd recorders are now coming without a tuner so you need to use an external tuner which can complicate the process.
