I'm nonplussed about this problem. Xvid AVI-sourced DVDs are freezing at periodic intervals on my Toshiba HD-A20 but ALL DISCS do play flawlessly on a cheapie 25 dollar DVD player. The Toshiba must be FFWDed to continue playing. At no time does the counter on the player increment.
The caveat here is that some AVI-sourced DVDs created with the same drives, discs and software DO Play correctly on the Toshiba but others do not. This is why I'm confused.
Software used:
DVDFlick with default settings, creating ISO image, and also VIDEO_TS folders
Nero 7 with DVD Video defaults (to burn VIDEO_TS)
DVDDecrypter with defaults (to burn ISO version)
Hardware used:
HL-DT-ST (LG Branded) DVD-RAM GH22NP20 IDE DVD dual-layer burner
TSSTcorp (Samsung branded) CDDVDRW SH-S223Q SATA DVD Dual Layer burner
Discs tried:
Verbatim Dual Layer DVD+R DL
Verbatim Single Layer Lightscribe DVD+R
Memorex Single Layer DVD+R
HP Single Layer DVD+R
Don't know what else to try. The fact that some discs do play OK but others do not using the exact same discs, software and burners makes this a pain in the asterisk to figure out. But keep in mind that ALL of these discs play in the cheap DVD player and on the PC DVD drive.
Any ideas?
Phil

This must be some bitrate problems....just like what ive gone through days ago.
I have also produced these kind of DVDs, wherein my home DVD player can't play the discs properly, just like what you have described but my aunt's DVD player can play it smoothly.
It might be that the Toshiba one couldn't keep up with your DVDs.
i recommend using FAVC which uses HC Encoder, an encoder that is good at lower bitrates. As you said, you are using xvid avi's. These avi's has low bitrates (about 1.5-2 mbps).
1. In FAVC, Source & Output tab, browse the avi files. If you want cool menus and want to edit it later, click the 'Keep' under 'Working Files'. 'Temporary Files Folder' is where the Working files are saved. Also make sure 'HC' is ticked under 'Encoder'.
2. Click on the Tab 'HC Options'. Click the 'Best' under 'Quality of Encoding' and set the 'Matrix' to 'MPEG'. Click '8' under 'DC precision'. If you have movies in the total of 4 hrs(about 2 avi movies), click 'half-d1' under 'video resolution'. If you have the total of about 5.5 hrs(about 3 movies), then choose 'VCD'.
3. (Optional) Optional because im not really sure about this and what this does. Go to "Advanced Scripting" tab and click "Use Directshow source for avi files instead of avisource".
4. Click 'Generate DVD'.
NOTE: make the Settings in FAVC are all in default before following the steps above. It is because i didn't mention other things.
*FAVC doesn't produce a cool menu, but if you really want one, then use GuiForDVDAuthor with the Working files you have kept awhile ago. For me, i use TMPGEnc DVD Authoring 3 but this is not free.*
Also, don't forget to check the results because there might problems you don't know, and you won't notice it after you burned it. So make sure of everything before you burn.
5. Using the results, burn them with "ImgBurn", an excellent burner. 4x speed is recommended.

Good luck. I hope this all works.
