  1. i am receiving signals through dishtv(DTH) antena. that means it may be classified as digital??? i would like to have suggestions as to how can i capture the video. i use pixelview play tv pro picture card. through ulead video studio , i capture the video to my pc. i am using xp and i have amd mechine. there are options for capturing the video as dvd/vcd/or customised format. what should be the format of my capture. after capturing i used to convert to dvd and burn them in dvd disks. sometimes the pictures are not that much sharp when burned.there are so many classifications as half d-1,full d-1 etc. i am confused.plz suggest.

This is a link for a bitrate calculator. This will help you determine how much video you can fit on a disc at a given bitrate.

Generally speaking the higher the bitrate the better the quality will be but you won't be able to put as much video on the disc.

Half d1 is 352x480/576(ntsc/pal respectively). That will let you squeeze a little more video on the disc at a given bitrate.

It also depends on your capture and encoding proceedures. If you capture at a high bitrate and then need to transcode (or shrink) the video to fit a disc than it will not look as good.

This will take some trial and error testing to see what looks good for you.

You might want to start by capturing shorter programs say a half hour or hour long shows. Than you can start tweaking the settings for this benchmark. At that length you can set a relatively high bitrate because the length isn't long and it will look better. However if you record four or more hours you will have to reduce the bitrate and it will not look very good.

Follow some of these recommendations and you will be on your way to improving your capturing. However please note you will not be able to make it look better than your original source. But with careful planning and realistic expecations you should be able to make it look very close to what you original source was.
