I am looking at a printer upgrade in the near future. I would like it to be a all-in-one model. I would also like to be able to print CD/DVD disc if possible. I have never done Disc printing, so all input would be great.
I am partial to Canon but am open to other brands. here is a printer I was looking at.

    Comments about this printer?

I searched the forums but was not satisfied.

    thanks

  2. Do Canon printers print CD/DVD in the USA now? There was a patent dispute which prevented it for quite a while. I didn't notice anything about CD/DVD printing in that Amazon listing. Canon printers sold elsewhere in the world can print to CD/DVD though, so most USA models are hackable. Make sure you can find a firmware hack if you need it.

I've been using a hacked IP 4000 for a few years now. I'm happy with it.

I also needed to upgrade our printer, and wanted an all-in-one. I researched friends, internet, etc. and went with the Canon PIXMA MX850. purchased at Staples last week, and paid $169 with a rebate of $20. My receipt states that the rebate is available, until 1-3-09. Bought this model for the all-in-one features, and the ability to connect via Ethernet. Our house is hard wired with gigabit connections in every room. We have this placed in the spare bedroom, yet all computers (6) have the all-in-one functionality. print speed is fast and quiet. Photo quality is great, but i am comparing to a six year old HP 970csi. I am unaware of the print to disc capabilities, but you can verify on the Canon web page for all specifications.

no canons in the u.s. print on cd/dvd without modification that may void your warranty. that said once the mods are done on the models that print cd/dvd elsewhere, they print very nicely on cd/dvd i'm not a fan of the new canon chipped cartridges though..... too much like epsons. maybe look at the hp cd/dvd capable printers?

I own the Canon Pixma ip4500 and I've modified it to print to CD/DVD. All you have to do is buy a CD tray on Ebay and push a few buttons on it to make it do the job. Yes, that is some serious warranty voiding modification right there (that's sarcasm), although I suppose that removing the piece of crap plastic that blocks where you put the tray might technically count as voiding the warranty. But you could always put it back. All the buttons do is change it from USA default settings, which mean don't print to discs, to European settings where the patent is not in force and the printer can print to discs. You could always change the settings back to USA if you wanted to return it.

I originally bought some model of Epson printer (I don't remember any more which one) to do this. The Epson printer refused to recognize the Epson ink cartridges that came with the printer. I did some research and found that this happens from time to time and the only "fix" is to exchange the printer for another one. I decided "screw Epson" and returned it to NewEgg and bought the Canon instead. I've had no issues with the Canon. It always has recognized official Canon cartridges. Epson is so scared that you might (gasp!) use a cartridge that didn't come from Epson that some of their printers won't recognize ANY cartridge like in my problem. Canon printers don't seem to be that bad.

The Canon route is not your cheapest option as the CD tray is going to cost you about $15-20 on Ebay. But I am very satisfied with the printer and I probably will never buy Epson again. I very strongly recommend for your discs that you mail order ONLY Taiyo Yuden Watershield discs. They make them for CD-R and DVD-R (sorry, no other formats though) and there is really nothing as good as them.
