    Hi,

In the near future I'll get a Philips DVP5990 DVD player. The player contains HDMI technology (1080p) and an USB 2.0 port. I just have been reading a bit about HDMI, and as far as I can see it is a "connector interface for transmitting uncompressed digital streams" (Wikipedia on HDMI).

    Two questions:
    1. It is not possible to burn HDMI on a DVD, but the quality of the movie you get does depend on the type of disk, blu-ray, DVD9?
    2. Will you still get a better quality if you look to a normal DVD5 movie?

    Abel

PS If you could point me to enlightening websites (on this subject) I would be greatly helped.

HDMI is not a format, it is a digital connection. You cannot burn in HDMI format.

Bluray will, in most cases, look far better than DVD because it uses a much higher resolution and a high bitrate.

This player is a standard DVD player with a HDMI output over which it will perform upscaling of the standard DVD image. Will this be better than the upscaling your TV does by itself - perhaps. It depends on the TV. It is Divx Ultra certified, so it can use Divx menus and subtitles etc, but it is still limited to Divx SD resolutions (720 wide or less), so the quality will be no better than DVD. It will not play BluRay, or H264 material from DVD.

In short, it is a DVD player like most other DVD players.

Thanks for the reply. I do hope it will work a bit better with my Philips Flatscreen TV, which is HDMI prepared. So here is hoping :P
