item #5 on that list really says it all.
Blu Ray is the Laserdisc of the 21st century -- the "solution" to a problem that nobody had.

Much too much, about Blu-ray being NG. I liked DVD , and HDDVD and I like my Blu-ray just as much. Whats the sense of a 1080p TV without HD media. However, I have gotten to the point where I will admit that it's the movie industry that's just not up to the HD task.

So many of the movies that I have watched on BR have no pop. I mean how many times can you watch the same few movies that look really good in Hi-def.

3/4 of the movies out there just look somewhat better on hi-def than DVD, but in my opinion, 'somewhat better' is not going to topple the DVD stronghold. Not even for me.

The thing that sticks out for me in the article is the reference to the format war. The solution was fine to the problem of not enough def but the whole notion of going to war over it was just stupid.

  5. I love every single minute of the industries inability to spend money on content, mind you my generation (i am 55) saw the start of music as we know it today, and may be, just may be, there are no more ideas !

  6. I recently rented 28 Days Later on Blu-ray and it looked horrible. Worse than upscaled standard DVD. A terrible transfer (perhaps the original movie looks bad, I don't know). Some Blu-ray discs look really great, of course... but I don't see the masses adopting Blu-ray anytime soon. Too expensive. It's still something only a handful of videophile types like me care about. It's akin to laserdisc, SACD and DVD-Audio. A niche product.

  7. I'd agree with 5. DVD is good enough.

Most of my DVD collecting is of vintage television and the vast majority of these can only be upscaled for Blue-Ray release anyway. My current set up already does that so why re-buy discs and a new player that do exactly the same thing again.

Having said that, isn't there a possibility of technology improving upon existing DVD playback? If up-scaling can be continually improved upon then it would be better to get the new player alone than the new-player *and* new discs.

Is this in the right direction or the Kings New Clothes: http://www.home-entertainment.toshiba.co.uk/consumer/home.nsf/pages/xd-500_offer?opend...source=content
